The BAI Investor Survey 2024 published today by the Bundesverband Alternative Investments e.V. (BAI), the central lobby group for the alternative investments industry in Germany, provides transparent insights into private markets investments by German institutional investors and shows what changes can be expected in the institutional portfolio. In recent months, BAI surveyed 111 German institutional investors who manage over €2,300 billion in assets under management (AuM). Dr Philipp Bunnenberg, BAI Head of Alternative Markets, is delighted: ‘Despite a challenging market environment, many investors have pushed ahead with their portfolio diversification via additional alternative asset classes. The increased experience of German institutional investors is reflected in increasingly sophisticated strategies. In this respect, we have observed greater demand for niche strategies and an increase in co-investments in all asset classes over the past two years. In the coming twelve months, we continue to expect the greatest demand for private debt and infrastructure strategies. Private equity fundraising will also pick up again compared to the same period last year.’

BAI Managing Director Frank Dornseifer states: ‘The results of this year's survey once again confirm the importance of our association's work in the field of alternative investments. The infrastructure asset class in particular shows that regulation and taxes must reflect and flank the significant increase in demand. Here, we were able to provide important impetus through the initiatives launched by the German government, for example in the amendment of the Investment Ordinance, in particular the increase in the risk capital quota and the introduction of a separate infrastructure quota, but also in the modified tax regulations for the acquisition of infrastructure, which are enormously important for investors, but also for the German economy.’
