Burkhard Balz, Deutsche Bundesbank
Burkhard Balz has been a member of the Executive Board of the Deutsche Bundesbank since September 2018. He is responsible for banking and financial supervision, cash management, the digital euro, payment and settlement systems, information technology, and international central bank dialogue. Balz is a member of the Eurosystem Task Force on Central Bank Digital Currencies. Additionally, he is a deputy member of the Board of Directors of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and serves on the BIS Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures.
From 2009 until his transition to the Deutsche Bundesbank, the lawyer and trained banker was a member of the European Parliament. There, he was a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and served as the financial spokesperson for the EPP Group from 2014 to 2018. As a rapporteur, Balz was responsible for various reports including Latvia's accession to the Eurozone, the Solvency II Directive, and regulations on the European supervisory authorities. From 2014 to 2018, he was a member of the EPP Group's Executive Board. He was also a member of the ASEAN delegation. Balz chaired the European Parliamentary Financial Services Forum from 2014 to 2018 and was the chairman of the Hong Kong Friendship Group in the European Parliament.
Before his membership in the European Parliament, Balz worked for Commerzbank AG in Brussels and Hanover, most recently as Head of the Institutional Clients Department.
